Emthonjeni Music Institution is a vibrant music education programme dedicated to empowering young people, discovering raw talent, and nurturing it into professional excellence. We believe that every individual is created with unique gifts and talents, and it is vital for children to discover their purpose early. Through music, we equip young people with the knowledge, discipline, and confidence to build their future beyond societal expectations and traditional career paths.
Our Story
Founded in January 2017 by Mr. Mpho Masina—a qualified musician and educator with over a decade of teaching experience—Emthonjeni Music Institution has grown into a premier hub for music education in Gauteng.
From humble beginnings, we now proudly serve over 150 students with the support of 20 professional tutors across the province. Over the past eight years, our work has expanded from schools and private homes to fully equipped studios, and we now also offer online lessons and digital study materials, making music education more accessible than ever.

Mpho Masina
Managing Director | Founder
Mpho Masina is the Founder & Managing Director of Emthonjeni Music—a pianist, music director, educator, and entrepreneur. He began in church and formalised his training with a Diploma in Jazz & Popular Music (TUT) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education (UNISA). After coaching and developing content at Casterbridge Music Academy (2015–2017), he founded Emthonjeni in 2017, designing programmes for 10+ schools and enrolling 80+ students in graded exams. He has taught at ACUDEO Thorntree and Amberfield College, and since 2021 heads Music at Woodlands College. As a performer and MD, he has appeared at Joy of Jazz, Cape Town Jazz Festival, Macufe, SA State Theatre, Bushfire, Moretele, Grahamstown and Moshito.
Phindile is a South African guitarist, vocalist, composer & educator. Blending African roots with jazz and neo-soul, she has featured at the Pierneef Theatre and mentors choirs and soloists. Her lessons emphasise creativity, accessibility and practical results. Lessons build fluency and stage poise.
Sipho is an accredited violin and viola tutor and performer. He has taught privately and in programmes, preparing learners for skilful solo playing and ensemble work from quartets to full orchestras. His approach builds solid technique, musicality and stage confidence at all levels. He guides poise.
Thato is a dedicated violinist and tutor trained through the UNISA Music Foundation. He has performed with leading orchestras and entered competitions via Stanford, the University of Pretoria, Stellenbosch and UNISA. She teaches practical violin and ABRSM theory, and performs as Strings in Harmony.
Tshepo Mashego is a drummer, arranger, and composer. He began at 10, playing in Limpopo churches and learning from older musicians. Soon in demand, he moved to Pretoria after school, jammed widely, and was recognised for his feel—leading to regular session work with bands and artists.
Elvis Thokozani Nkosi is a versatile guitarist and educator from Mpumalanga. Trained at Free Jazz Academy with UNISA theory, he teaches at Emthonjeni. A theatre & session jazz player, he directs music, mentors learners with patient practical guidance. Lessons focus on tone, time and stagecraft well.
Mzwakhe Msimango is a drummer, arranger, private tutor with 15+ years’ experience. He has performed with bands and artists, and offers drum and theory lessons. Trained at MAG and TUT he brings solid technique, feel, and confidence to every class. He has worked with Four Forty, Ayanda Jiya, and more.
Tshepo Thantsha is a pianist, producer, and tutor. Trained in Jazz and Popular Music at CJC he supports learners grade 1 to 7 and beyond. He teaches beginners and advanced pianists, prepares graded exams, and performs with Serenity Gospel Group / Psalmists. He assists upcoming artists in production.
